The press coverage of events at Kerelaw, from the initial investigation into claims of abuse, through the trial of John and Matt, to the ongoing investigations into other ex members of staff, cannot claim to present a balanced view of the story.
In their attempts to sell more newspapers, certain parts of the Media have tried - and succeeded - to stir up hatred and scaremongering among the general public in their one-sided reporting of the Kerelaw story.
The Media gloried in publishing the more shocking "allegations" that John and Matt had been charged with, revelling in the shock factor and creating a huge public bias against the defendants. Who is to say that some of the jury had not been following the papers' coverage of the story?
Clear examples of the Media's slanted reporting were apparent to those closely following the trial. One of the "victims" gave testimony which was partly reported in the press, however they neglected to print the part where the "victim" admitted that he had lied in court the day before whilst giving evidence.
This part of the story was conveniently omitted from the papers. This should not be allowed to happen, but it does on a regular basis. John and Matt were tried and found guilty in the press without any attempt to present both sides of the story.
